North Carolina Guided Canadian Goose and Snow Goose Hunts

Canadian Goose

Algonquian Indians called this area "Carotank" meaning "land of the wild goose." Today, it is known as Currituck. The area remains synonymous with waterfowling in more than name alone. Situated on the Atlantic Flyway, Currituck Sound is an ideal stopover for migrating ducks, geese and swans. Nothing has changed since these early days except for the resident goose population. Each year it continues to rise. We hunt over the Currituck Sound in a float blind or in stationary bush blinds. We can accommodate up to four hunters at a time. The limit of resident Canada geese is 8 per man per day.

The season is September 1 through 30.

Hunters are advised to bring a light coat, rain gear, bug spray and or ThermaCell, license, guns, and ammunition. At this time of the year, the weather is generally cool in the morning but warms up in the afternoon. Layers work best so if you get hot or cold, you can remove or add clothing. I would suggest shooting BB's, BBB's, or T's for Canada goose. Also, mid-September is the early Teal season. During this time you have the opportunity to shoot 4 Teal and your limit of Geese for no extra charge.

North Carolina Guided Canadian Goose and Snow Goose Hunts

Snow Goose

Snow goose hunting is a passion of mine... my favorite type of hunting. I hope to share with you the excitement and challenge of going snow goose hunting. There is nothing more exciting than watching thousands of birds come from the refuges to the plentiful agricultural fields to feed. This type of hunting requires lots of planning and decoys. Hunters are asked to help out by putting out and picking up our G&H Decoys. We will hunt over 600-700 decoys in fields. We can take up to five hunters and recommend using 3" or 3-1/2" in BB's, BBB's, or T's steel, tungsten, or bismuth as your shot of choice. Most shots range from 10-60 yards. 10 and 12 gauge guns are suggested but we definitely allow 3" 20 gauges to be used as well. Cold weather camouflage including gloves, rain gear, gun, ammunition, and license will need to be brought with you. Waders are the suggested boot, but knee boots are acceptable.

Snow goose season begins November 15 and ends the first weekend of March. Our limit is 15 birds per day.

The first part of the season in November we do a combo hunt for ducks and snow geese over the Currituck Sound. We generally hunt over 60-70 G&H floaters. This is our early season snow goose hunt. Mid-season will start the week before Christmas. This is a great time to do a swan/snow goose combo. This takes place over the Currituck Sound or over 46,000 acres of winter wheat, corn, or soybean fields. For swan information, please refer to my swan page. For those of you who generally end your hunting season at the end of January, snow goose is offered until March as our late season, so you can extend your hunting season another month. This is the best time for snow goose hunting. Northeast North Carolina is the largest place for the greater snow geese as a wintering ground. These greaters make up the largest sized subspecies of the snow geese, but the lesser snows, which are smaller, are greater in number. The smallest snow goose is the Ross goose, which from time to time, we are able to harvest. Starting from Canada, working their migration south as they have been for years, one of their final destinations is Currituck County. The greater snow goose is growing in numbers. In 2006 the estimated population was 1.5 million! The 2007 migration season estimated a population near 2 million! As the population grows, so does the sport of snow goose hunting. It is the hardest out of all waterfowl hunting, but the most rewarding. Electronic callers are not permitted for the greater snow geese. We use snow goose calls, decoys, and natural agriculture fields in order to harvest geese. New to this season is our Allen Bliven Snow Goose call nameded Snow Haven. With this, we are excited about the upcoming season. We invite you to join us as we start our season in September for duck/geese and follow the migration until March.
